Is it possible for us to become sons of God? If it is, how does it happen? What does the new birth have to do with being sons of God?
Since God, as a Father, is all about relationship, it shouldn't surprise us to discover that He wants us all to be sons of God.
Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
Son of God is a generic term used in the New Testament to describe both males and females that have come into a relationship with God as their Father.
Gal 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
The only way to become a son of God is to be born again (see Jn 3:3) through faith in Christ.
Heb 12:5-8 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: "My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; (6) for whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives." (7) If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? (8) But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.
True sons of God respond positively to the Father's chastening.
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
True sons of God allow the Holy Spirit to lead them.
Gal 4:4-6 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, (5) to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. (6) And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"
God the Father has adopted us as sons.
As with human adoption, this implies that God deliberately chose us to be a part of His family, because He loves us and wants us.
2 Cor 6:17-8 Therefore "Come out from among them and be separate", says the Lord. "Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. (18) I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty."
True sons of God, while not perfect, live holy lives that are dedicated to God's ways.
