About This Bible Study on The Fear of God

These days you don't seem to hear much about the fear of God. People want to hear all about the love of God. But fear Him? Why? Isn't God just a really nice guy? Why would you want to be afraid of Him?

While the love of God is an essential message that the world needs to hear, it is also necessary that people have a healthy dose of the fear of God. Without it, they simply won't grow.

The Fear of God

Why is the fear of God important?

Is 11:2-3 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. (3) His delight is in the fear of the LORD, and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears;

The fear of God is part of this prophecy about Jesus; the Spirit of the fear of God rested upon Him.

If we want to be like Jesus, then the same Spirit needs to rest upon us also.

Prov 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day;

We are commanded to fear God.

2 Sam 23:3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me: "He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God."

Those with authority over others are commanded to rule in the fear of God.

Eph 5:21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

The fear of God is the basis of godly submission.

What is the fear of God?

Prov 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.

The fear of God is the hatred of evil.

Job 28:28 And to man He said, "Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding."

Prov 16:6 In mercy and truth atonement is provided for iniquity; and by the fear of the LORD one departs from evil.

The fear of God is wisdom and provides the motivation to depart from evil.

Is 33:6 Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, and the strength of salvation; the fear of the LORD is His treasure.

The fear of God is God's treasure.

2 Chron 19:9 And he commanded them, saying, "Thus you shall act in the fear of the LORD, faithfully and with a loyal heart:"

Acting in the fear of God means to act faithfully and loyally.

What are the consequences of not walking in the fear of God?

Prov 1:28-29 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. (29) Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD,

Wisdom will be not be found by those who reject the fear of God.

What are the benefits of walking in the fear of God?

Prov 14:26 In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge.

The fear of God brings confidence, and provides a place of refuge for God's children.

Prov 14:27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death.

The fear of God brings abundant life and keeps us from the snares of death.

Prov 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honour and life.

Riches, honour and life come from the fear of God.

2 Cor 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The fear of God is the basis of true holiness.

2 Chron 19:7 Now therefore, let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take care and do it, for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, no partiality, nor taking of bribes.

The fear of God is the basis of obedience to Him.

Prov 19:23 The fear of the LORD leads to life, and he who has it will abide in satisfaction; he will not be visited with evil.

The fear of God brings life, satisfaction, and protection from evil.

Prov 2:4-5 If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; (5) then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

Prov 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The fear of God brings knowledge, especially the knowledge of God.

Ps 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.

Wisdom comes through the fear of God.

Prov 10:27 The fear of the LORD prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.

The fear of God lengthens a person's life.
