Sermon Illustrations: Mercy

One difference between grace and mercy is that grace is getting what we don’t deserve (favour), and mercy is not getting what we do deserve (justice). R.T. Kendall Total Forgiveness

I am not a naturally merciful person; I have a strong sense of justice. When I watch a movie, I want to see the bad guy get what's coming to him. The trouble is, when I stand before God, I don't want to receive what I deserve: What I want is mercy.

A man may be a mass murderer and deserve the death penalty, but the court sentences him to life in prison. That's mercy. He deserves to die, but is allowed to live, although he is still punished.
