About This Bible Study on Seeking God

Seeking God is one of those phrases that sounds spiritual, but can leave you with the feeling that it's just a little unclear as to what it means. Would you be able explain to someone what it means to seek God?

If not, how do you actually do it? After all, if you don't know what something is, how can you put it into practice?

Why is seeking God important?

Ps 14:2 The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God.

Ps 53:2 God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God.

God is looking for those who will seek Him.

1 Chron 16:11 Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His face evermore!

We are commanded to seek Him.

Ps 10:4 The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.

Only the wicked fails to seek God.

What does it mean to seek the Lord?

Deut 4:29-31 But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul. (30) When you are in distress, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, when you turn to the LORD your God and obey His voice (31) (for the LORD your God is a merciful God), He will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.

2 Chron 14:4 He commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to observe the law and the commandment.

Seeking God involves turning to Him and obeying His voice.

2 Chron 30:18-19 ... But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, "May the good LORD provide atonement for everyone (19) who prepares his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he is not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary."

2 Chron 19:3 Nevertheless good things are found in you, in that you have removed the wooden images from the land, and have prepared your heart to seek God.

2 Chron 12:14 And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek the LORD.

The person who seeks God must first prepare their heart.

Ezra 6:21 Then the children of Israel who had returned from the captivity ate together with all who had separated themselves from the filth of the nations of the land in order to seek the LORD God of Israel.

To seek God a person must separate themselves from all known sin.

Hosea 10:12 Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, till He comes and rains righteousness on you.

Seeking the Lord means breaking up the fallow ground of our hearts in preparation for the seed, God's Word.

Is 51:1 Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.

It means to follow after righteousness and listening to God.

Zeph 2:3 Seek the LORD, all you meek of the earth, who have upheld His justice. Seek righteousness, seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the Lord's anger.

It means to seek righteousness and humility

Zech 8:21 The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, "Let us continue to go and pray before the LORD, and seek the LORD of hosts. I myself will go also."

It involves prayer.

Jer 50:4 "In those days and in that time," says the LORD, "the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; with continual weeping they shall come, and seek the LORD their God."

Seeking the Lord can involve repentance.

Amos 5:6 Seek the LORD and live, lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, with no one to quench it in Bethel;

Choosing to seek the Lord is a choice to live.

When should we seek God?

2 Chron 16:12 And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians.

We should seek the Lord during times of physical need.

2 Chr 20:3-4 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. (4) So Judah gathered together to ask help from the LORD; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.

We should seek God during times of crisis.

Is 55:6 Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.

We should seek God while He is near and can be found.

What are the benefits of seeking the Lord?

1 Chron 16:10 Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD!

The hearts of those who seek God will rejoice.

Ps 34:10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.

If we seek the Lord we shall not lack any good thing.

Ps 69:32 The humble shall see this and be glad; and you who seek God, your hearts shall live.

Our hearts shall live.

Prov 28:5 Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand all.

Understanding comes to those who seek the Lord.

Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

God provides for those who seek Him.
