Topical Bible Studies: Peace

About This Bible Study on Peace

The history of the world is a history of wars and warfare. There have been very few times of peace.

Which isn't really that surprising, since even on a personal level, people are so often at war in their relationships.

Basically, for the world to achieve lasting peace, people must first experience peace in their hearts. Is this possible? Where does peace come from? God's Word has the answers.

Peace

How does a person get peace?

Rom 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

1 Cor 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

Eph 6:15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Peace is first of all a spiritual attribute that originates with our relationship with God.

If a person is not at peace with God, they can't really be at peace with themselves.

Peace with God comes through faith in the completed work of Christ on the cross as He took the full penalty for our sins.

That's why the Christian message is called "the gospel of peace".

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Peace is a gift from the Lord Jesus Christ to His followers.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Peace is also part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Being fruit implies that it is something that grows.

And since it is the fruit of the Spirit, it can only come by being yielded to the Spirit.

Phil 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; (7) and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Ongoing peace comes from bringing our anxieties to God in prayer, and exercising faith that He will take care of the answer, by giving thanks to Him

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

Peace comes from keeping your mind on the Lord.

Rom 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Peace is the result of believing.

How does peace help the believer?

Col 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

God's peace is meant to rule in our hearts.

The word "rule" means to act as a judge or arbiter, which indicates that it's God's peace which helps us to discern what is or isn't of God.

This is not to be confused with the kind of peace which results from an absence of war.

Jesus said, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

Spiritually, this world is a war zone, full of tribulation.

And often, many Christians opt out by giving in to the enemy's demands.

When they do, they experience a kind of peace, but it isn't the true peace of God.

It's the peace that comes from being left alone by the devil because they are doing what he wants.
