Topical Bible Studies: Humility

About This Bible Study on Humility

Pride is one of the great dangers of the Christian walk. It may not be as obvious as some other sins, but it is just as effective in destroying lives. Which is why humility is such an important quality.

And although many people believe that God treats everyone the same, the Bible makes it clear that He treats humble people differently.

Humility

How does a person become truly great?

Mat 18:4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

According to Jesus, greatness has nothing to do with the natural advantages of life such as wealth, fame, status, or power; it has to do with being a genuinely humble person.

Does God treat a humble person differently?

James 4:6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

Only humble people are able to access the grace of God.

James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

1 Pet 5:5-7 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." (6) Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, (7) casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

God will promote the humble.

Does God require us to be humble?

Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

This simple formula of what God requires from every human being contains three elements: Doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God.

Are there benefits to being humble?

Prov 18:12 Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

Humility leads to honour.

Prov 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honour and life.

When accompanied by the fear of God, humility leads to riches, honour and life.

How can we become humble?

Col 3:12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;

As with many Christian qualities, when God made us a new creation in Christ (2 Cor 5:17), humility came as part of the package deal.

Our job is to exercise our faith in putting it on.

How important is humility?

Titus 3:2 to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.

We are to show humility towards everyone.

In other words, God sees humility as being such an important part of our testimony that it's a 24/7 job.

Rom 12:16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Humility is associated with the ability to be accurate in our assessment of ourselves.

Is God humble?

Mat 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Mat 21:5 Tell the daughter of Zion, "Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey."

Phil 2:6-8 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, (7) but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. (8) And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

When God decided to visit this planet in the flesh, He didn't come as a powerful emperor, but as a lowly servant.

Since the goal of every true Christian is to be like Christ, that means that we should also strive to be humble.
