Topical Bible Studies: God's Word

About This Bible Study on God's Word

The Word of God is the foundation for all Christian belief. Through it, God communicates with us, corrects us, challenges us, encourages us, and builds us up. Without God's Word, there would be no standard of reference on which to base our faith.

So it is important for every Christian to know and understand what God's Word does, and how it works.

God's Word

Why is God's Word so important?

2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

This Scripture sums up the enormous value of God's Word to teach, reprove, correct, instruct and equip men (and women) of God.

Ps 138:2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, and praise Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; for You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

As precious as the name of the Lord may be, God has exalted His Word even above His name.

Does God's Word produce faith?

Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Yes, but only if received by a hearing heart.

How does God's Word work in our lives?

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

God's Word is so powerful that it can even divide spirit from soul and discern the real, yet hidden, motivations of our hearts.

What positive effects does God's Word have on us?

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. (32) And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

If we determine to live according to God's Word, it will break the bondages in our lives and set us free.

Ps 119:9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.

If we walk according to God's Word, it will cleanse our ways; this is not to be confused with cleansing from guilt.

Ps 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

God's Word guides us on the path of life.

Ps 119:81 My soul faints for Your salvation, but I hope in Your word.

God's Word gives us reason to hope.

2 Pet 1:4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

God's Word is the source of His promises.

How can I get the most out of God's Word?

Josh 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Meditating on God's Word has a powerful effect in our lives; to meditate means to contemplate, think about.

Ps 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You!

Memorising God's Word will help to keep us from sin.

James 1:23-25 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; (24) for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. (25) But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

Ultimately, for God's Word to really transform our lives, it is necessary for us to obey it.
