Topical Bible Studies: Boldness

About This Bible Study on Boldness

A lot of people struggle with self-confidence, and the lack of self-confidence is often related to low self-esteem. Methods of dealing with the problem range from assertiveness classes to therapy that focuses on developing good self-esteem.

Although they are hot issues among psychologists and counsellors, self-esteem and self-confidence are not words that exist in the Bible. Instead, the Bible talks about boldness. Boldness is the kind of quality that helps people to step out even though they may feel there is an element of risk. Boldness is a spiritual quality that isn't dependent on your personality. You can be a quiet person and still be bold!

Boldness

Why is boldness so important?

Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marvelled. And they realised that they had been with Jesus.

Boldness is one of the characteristics of a follower of Christ.

When Peter and John spoke boldly, it was through this that the priests, elders and rulers of the Jews recognised that they had been with Jesus.

What is boldness needed for?

Acts 4:29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,

Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

2 Cor 3:12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech;

2 Cor 7:4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my boasting on your behalf. I am filled with comfort. I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation.

1 Thes 2:2 But even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict.

Overwhelmingly, the most common need for boldness in the New Testament is in speaking the word.

No doubt, this is still true today as Christians generally struggle with the idea of stepping out and sharing the gospel with unbelievers.

Eph 3:12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

Heb 10:19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,

We also have boldness to enter the presence of God (the Holiest) because Christ has given us confident access through His blood.

How can I get boldness?

Ps 138:3 In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul.

Boldness comes through sincerely praying for it as the disciples did in Acts 4:29; their prayer was answered in Acts 4:31 with the direct result that they spoke the Word of God.

1 Tim 3:13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Boldness comes through serving well.

1 John 4:17-18 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. (18) There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

Boldness comes through perfect love which casts out fear.

Prov 28:1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Boldness comes by avoiding sin, and living a righteous life.

Books to learn from

Spiritual warfare is an area of Christian life that is easily relegated to one of two extremes. It is either seen as irrelevant in our enlightened times and therefore ignored. Or it is viewed as an activity to be engaged in on special occasions when the church participates in a spiritual warfare meeting. That's just what the devil would like us to think. This book is based on sound Biblical teaching that every Christian, like it or not, is involved in warfare daily. If you're serious about overcoming the devil, read this book. Topics covered include: Satan's greatest weapon, overcoming temptation, God's Word and other spiritual weapons, how to use the whole armor of God, the real meaning of "in Jesus' name", the power of the blood of Jesus, and more.
